All you need to know about Adult Contemporary – the sixth studio album release from Canadian funklords Chromeo – is that I have basically been blasting it non-stop since its release into the world on February 16 2024.
I’ve been a fan of Dave 1 and P-Thugg since 2011 and from when I first heard ‘Hot Mess’ for the first time. I enjoyed what I heard from that era and from before, but things truly went into overdrive for me in 2014 with the release of White Women, studio album four. That LP was one of my top ten for the year, and lead single Come Alive (featuring the equally talented Toro y Moi) made that year’s Top 20. And seeing them play live for the first time at London’s iconic Roundhouse in June of that year is a cool memory that I will forever hold.
Prolific since then with other audible treats that are definitely worth having a listen to, but let’s bring things to the present. I seriously CANNOT GET ENOUGH of Adult Contemporary. Some very cool singles released in the build up, including the La Roux featuring ‘Replacements’ (seriously, the La Roux-Chromeo collab should have happened years ago, and if they recorded and released a full joint album I wouldn’t be complaining!)
But if you take this body of work as a whole, it seriously oozes cool. The uptempo songs contained within, and the slower numbers (eg A Cut Above) are smooth af.
A special word please for CODA though. This is by far and away my favourite track on the album, and it is easily a Top 20 contender waiting to happen if it gets released in a format that qualifies. It should at the very least want to make you think about moving to it in a manner that matches the beat.
Plenty of that on offer if you choose to take the plunge and listen. And if I positively turn you towards and convert you to the cool ways of Chromeo as you do so, then my work here is done.
